WILL OF JAMES KETCHUM - Fayette County, Tennessee

I, James Ketchum, sound in mind and much afflicted in body and knowing the uncertainty of life do this 3rd day of Dec. 1868 make my last will and testament.

First -- Pay debts.

Second -- Sell all or part of the tract of land on Tulip Creek, Dallas County, Arkansas. Also sell a house and lot in the town of Princeton. Use the money "to purchase my wife Malissa Jane a suitable home near Hickory Wythe [Fayette Co., TN] or some other place as she may choose where she can have the advantages of schooling my children." Pay the taxes on any unsold land from the Tulip Creek tract, and on 300 acres on the Washita [Ouachita] River in Washita County, Arkansas. Directs that his executors may sell parts of the land from time to time to pay for the schooling of his children, but for no other purpose. When the children come of age, they shall be given equal shares of the remaining land. If it is necessary to support the family, Malissa Jane may sell the land. At the death of Malissa Jane, all remaining property shall be divided among the children "each one sharing alike."
